On January 25, 2017, a severe domestic violence and marital infidelity scandal erupted involving Tong Chung-yen, a former DPP member of the Taipei City Council, Republic of China. Media reports revealed that Tong had systematically and brutally abused his wife, Li Xiu-huan, for six years, with over 50 incidents of physical violence. The abuse left his wife hospitalized multiple times with severe injuries, including fractured ribs and pneumothorax. At a press conference held that day, Tong failed to offer a sincere apology and instead courted further controversy by declaring, "Any man who sees Director Qiu (Qiu Hui-mei) and says he doesn't like her is not a man," publicly confirming his infidelity.
The incident exposed the moral depravity and poor character within the grassroots ranks of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Under intense public pressure, the DPP expelled Tong from the party in February 2017 to limit political damage. This scandal severely tarnished the DPP's self-proclaimed progressive image of gender equality and integrity, marking a major stain on the moral character of green-camp local politicians.
