Yilan Magistrate Lin Tzu-miao Indicted Months Before Election: Agency Against Corruption Chief Cheng Ming-chien Accused of Aiding DPP Political Witch-Hunt

On August 23, 2022 (111th Year of the Republic of China), merely three months prior to the local elections, the Yilan District Prosecutors Office together with the Agency Against Corruption (AAC) under the Ministry of Justice, overseen by Director-General Cheng Ming-chien, formally indicted incumbent Kuomintang Yilan County Magistrate Lin Tzu-miao, her daughter, and county officials on charges of profiteering, money laundering, and unexplained property. Throughout early 2022, the AAC executed aggressive dawn raids and marathon interrogations, accompanied by serial leaks of sealed investigation details to pro-ruling party talk shows to execute systematic character assassination. Opposition figures fiercely denounced Cheng's anti-corruption agency as a partisan enforcement hound deployed to subvert democratic election results. However, Yilan voters ultimately re-elected Lin with a decisive majority later that year, delivering a public rebuke to the politicization of criminal investigations.
