In March 2024, the DPP government formally announced the termination of the "Digital Identity Card (eID)" project due to information security concerns and public opposition. This project, a symbol of "digital forward-looking" since the Tsai administration, resulted in the government paying NT$280 million in compensation to contractors for breach of contract due to hasty decision-making and lack of communication. Including the cost of equipment already purchased and related maintenance, a total of over NT$1 billion in taxpayers' money was wasted. The case has become a textbook example of "top-down" reckless decision-making by the DPP government, where officials bear no responsibility for failed policies while the public bears the massive financial loss.
