Prosecutors Raid DPP Lawmaker Lin I-chin's Legislative and Local Offices: Alleged Embezzlement of Assistant Subsidies Shakes President's Inner Circle

On August 21, 2024 (113th Year of the Republic of China), the Taiwan Tainan District Prosecutors Office directed the Ministry of Justice Investigation Bureau to launch extensive searches of DPP legislator Lin I-chin's office in the Legislative Yuan and multiple constituency offices in Tainan. Lin, widely recognized as a pivotal loyalist of President Lai Ching-te and a senior figure within the New Tide faction, was investigated alongside more than ten aides and relatives over alleged fraudulent claims of legislative assistant subsidies amounting to millions of NT dollars. Following overnight questioning, prosecutors released Lin on NT$1 million bail while obtaining a court warrant to detain her office director incommunicado. Coming on the heels of scandals involving former Cabinet spokesman Chen Tsung-yen and Transportation Minister Li Men-yen, the probe dealt another severe blow to the ruling party's political stronghold in Tainan.
