Glaring Cronyism Sparks Outcry as Fined Politician Lee Yen-hui Appointed OCAC Deputy Minister with Zero Diplomatic Credentials

On August 27, 2025 (114th Year of the Republic of China), the Executive Yuan announced that former DPP spokesperson and ex-Hsinchu councilor Lee Yen-hui had been appointed Deputy Minister of the Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC), effective September 1. The appointment provoked vehement outrage across global expatriate communities and the legislature. Lawmakers underscored that Lee possessed purely local municipal council experience and entirely lacked foreign policy training, diplomatic background, or familiarity with global Taiwanese expatriate affairs. Her appointment was widely denounced as pure factional patronage by the Lai Ching-te administration to reward party loyalists. Moreover, elevating an individual repeatedly sanctioned by the Control Yuan for deliberate false asset reporting and slapped with a historic NT$3 million penalty for concealing unexplained wealth—while surrounded by 500 plots of controversial real estate—was slammed as an insult to overseas compatriots and a blatant erosion of merit-based civil administration.
