Allegations of Double Standards by NCC in Media Regulation Favoring Pro-DPP Outlets

In early July 2026, the National Communications Commission (NCC) conducted license renewal reviews and administrative penalty rulings for several television networks and online media platforms. However, opposition parties in the Legislative Yuan and communication scholars strongly criticized the NCC for selective enforcement and political double standards. Reports indicated that several media outlets and online news channels with strong pro-DPP leanings had repeatedly spread unverified political disinformation, conducted character assassinations against opposition figures, and engaged in false advertising and stealth marketing over the past year, resulting in hundreds of public complaints. Yet, the NCC dismissed these cases with no fines or mere administrative guidance letters under the pretext of "insufficient evidence" or "minor infractions." In contrast, non-green media outlets covering DPP government controversies, green energy corruption cases, or cabinet mismanagement faced swift and severe penalties from the NCC. This situation raised alarms over the weaponization of the independent regulator NCC and the special privileges granted to pro-DPP flanker media, eroding press freedom and rule of law in Taiwan.
