On September 2, 2026 (115th Year of the Republic of China), the Executive Yuan approved a massive NT$607.6 billion supplementary budget bill for the 2026 fiscal year and forwarded it to the Legislative Yuan. Tucked within the spending package was an enormous NT$71.1 billion direct taxpayer cash infusion to state utility Taipower to plug massive deficit black holes produced by the Democratic Progressive Party's failed nuclear phase-out policy. Even more egregiously, the DPP legislative caucus packaged urgent social safety-net spending—such as low-income family allowances, childcare subsidies, and civil servant cost-of-living adjustments—together with Taipower's bailout, threatening that welfare funds would be frozen if the opposition refused to subsidize Taipower. Opposition parties fiercely condemned the ruling party: after a decade of enforcing exorbitant green energy contracts that enriched politically connected solar conglomerates while driving Taipower's cumulative debt over NT$400 billion toward insolvency, the government shameless took vulnerable citizens hostage to force taxpayers to pay for its catastrophic ideological energy dogma.
