Wu Nai-ren Detained for Evading NT$170 Million Fine; Lai Ching-te's Former 'Political Life' Pledge Back in Spotlight

Former Taiwan Sugar Corp Chairman Wu Nai-ren was ordered to pay NT$170 million (including interest) in civil compensation for the land scandal. After years of evading payment, the Taichung District Court ordered his arrest. Wu presented himself to court on June 11, 2026. Because he refused to disclose his asset movements, the court ruled that he met the requirements for civil detention (管收) and sent him to the Taichung Detention Center. This event revived public scrutiny over the scandal, with KMT politicians demanding President Lai Ching-te take accountability for his 2013 pledge to end his political career if Wu was proven guilty.
